So you just "came out of the closet" as I like to say. You may have just told a friend or family member that you would like to write a book. You've had a great idea for a book in your head that is just driving you crazy! Well, I know how you feel. I was in your shoes just about this time last year. I told my husband that I've always had the dream of being a writer and that I had been secretly writing a book. At first he thought I was crazy, but when I started telling others about it, he started to come around and encourage me a little more. I wanted to share with you some tips that I have learned about being a newbie writer. This is a hard business to get into, but seeing your book in someones hands is worth it!
Each day I will add a new tip. Some will be no brainers, and some will be an ah-ha moment for you. Hopefully I can help inspire you to get out there and write!
Tip #1: Finish Your Story
I know that sounds pretty silly. Of course I need to finish my story, isn't that the point? Well, you'd be surprised how many people ask if it's okay to send out querry letters to agents without having a complete manuscript. They say, "Well, I figure if someone asks for more, I'll just stay up all night and finish it." Do you honestly think the rest of your story will be as good as the beginning? Nope! Don't send anything out to an agent until you have something finished. I've talked to so many people this past year that claim to have started two or three novels. My advice to them? Finish one!! If you plan on attending any workshops or conferences, you need to have a complete manuscript (which is my next tip). The joy you feel when you can tell others that you have actually finished it, totally worth the stress.
Go write and tell me all about it!!
