My most recent rejection letter was quite helpful in a way. Here is a small portion of the letter:
"I appreciate this concept and I can understand it's connection to books like EMPTY. However, I'll have to pass on this one. I've found that there's been a number of books on body image and eating disorders in the last two years, and I'm not seeing a unique enough take on this concept to be able to sell it in the crowded market. Keep in mind another agent may feel differently, but I will have to pass."
It didn't say I suck as a writer and I'll never be published...so that's good. It's not saying please don't ever send anything to me again because you can't write worth a flip...so I see this as a more positive rejection letter. I'm sad because this agent would be nice to work with, but that doesn't mean I can't approach her later with the one I'm working on right now.
