Shouldn't every author strive for this? To have a fan base of readers who devour every last word until the end? To create characters and scenarios that leave the reader wanting more and grieving because it's over?
I was thinking about this other day when I gave some of my students my manuscript. They had been begging all year to read it and I was a little worried about giving it to them in fear that they wouldn't have this same reaction. Much my surprise, and happiness, they did. A group of my favorite students talked together about the parts that they loved the most. Several of them could even recite different parts of the book by memory. This definitely gave me the boost to continue writing.
Anyways, I also thought about series that I've read in the past ten years that have left me with a hole. Characters and settings that have stayed with me and refuse to leave.
