Okay...so you've just received yet another rejection letter from an agent who you thought would be "the one." First off, you will be okay...I promise. How do I know this? I've been there before. The first couple of rejection letters bothered me too. I mean, I'm awesome...why can't these agents see that? But then I realized that there were more fish in the sea and continued on in my search. Of course I wiped up some tears and had a few "adult beverages," but then I put my big girl panties on and went back to work.
My most recent rejection letter was quite helpful in a way. Here is a small portion of the letter:
"I appreciate this concept and I can understand it's connection to books like EMPTY. However, I'll have to pass on this one. I've found that there's been a number of books on body image and eating disorders in the last two years, and I'm not seeing a unique enough take on this concept to be able to sell it in the crowded market. Keep in mind another agent may feel differently, but I will have to pass."
It didn't say I suck as a writer and I'll never be published...so that's good. It's not saying please don't ever send anything to me again because you can't write worth a flip...so I see this as a more positive rejection letter. I'm sad because this agent would be nice to work with, but that doesn't mean I can't approach her later with the one I'm working on right now.
