Remember that childhood story The Little Engine that Could? Well, you can learn a lot from that little train. I feel myself getting down in the dumps when I open up an e-mail from an agent that I would love to work with, just to find a form rejection letter.
While I'm reading these letters, in the back of my head I keep saying to myself "I think I can, I think I can." And it actually works! I feel a thousand times better and more motivated to keep going. I think the reason why I keep "chugging" along (I know, pretty cheesy) is because I've always wanted to be a writer and never did anything about it. Putting myself out there for rejection sounded crazy to me. What really changed my mindset was when my grandpa died a few years ago. He was such a support system for me in school and my career as a teacher and now that he's in heaven, I know that he is pushing me along. I know that with him and God together in my corner, I will succeed. Plus, I need something to talk about at my book signings (I can't be an instant success!!).
So, this weekend I will be attending the Lexicon Writers' Conference in Denton, TX. I hope to get from this conference some more contacts with other writers like me, a few more agent contacts, and just enjoying the ride of becoming a writer.
For my next post, I will put pictures up from my book signing with James Rollins!!
